Directions to the Silver King

Mary Margaret Picking Fruit

Here are the directions from the Salt Lake City Airport to the Silver King that I copied from their website:
LOCATION

1485 Empire Ave., Park City, UT 84060
DRIVING DIRECTIONS:

From the Salt Lake City airport, proceed to I-80 Eastbound. Continue approximately 30 miles and exit at Park City/Kimball Junction exit 145. Continue approximately six miles and turn right at Empire Ave. Proceed approximately 100 yards and you will see the Silver King Hotel on the right.

Park City is usually a little cooler than Salt Lake City and Provo. But remember, it is easy to get a sunburn quickly here so don't forget the sunscreen. It cools off at night so don't forget a light jacket or sweater.

Golf Anyone?

Rachel Before her Marriage to Fred

We know many of us are excited to go on the Heber Creeper. However, we know of some dads that are not planning on going. Shauna Stott Godfrey's husband, Todd , and her dad, Gary would both be interested in keeping company with cousins on the golf course while others are training. Todd was going to try for an earlier t-time on Saturday at the Park City course. It is supposed to be beautiful, close to the hotel and a fun play. If you are interested in golfing Saturday please e-mail shauna.godfrey@comcast.net (Katherine's oldest daughter) as soon as possible.

Wasatch Academy

Barbara Anne 1938 Wasatch Academy Orange and Black Yearbook

Part of our family reunion is a visit to Mt. Pleasant and Wasatch Academy. All six children attended Wasatch Academy during the 1920s and 1930s. Katherine Stott and Barbara Erickson have been to Mt. Pleasant twice this spring to visit the town and Wasatch Academy to prepare for our trip on the Friday of the reunion.

Casey Brinkley, the Alumni Director at Wasatch Academy, has been very helpful showing us around campus and pulling old yearbooks with pictures of family members in them. They were quite an accomplished lot! She is arranging our visit that day to Wasatch Academy. For a minimal charge, Casey has arranged a lunch at the school just for us. We will see where our parents and grandparents went to chapel and class and we will also see John's Gym where Barbara Anne was a "Feminine Tiger" basketball player and the students ate their meals in the basement.

We would like to honor the Rasmussen siblings with a donation to Wasatch Academy. They graduated from Wasatch Academy between 1925 and 1939. The interior of John's Gym is being renovated into a Performing Arts Center for the school. For a family donation totaling $500, we can honor the six siblings with a plaque on one of the seats in the new performing arts center. You can donate at the reunion or donate now on the Wasatch Academy website through this link: http://www.wasatchacademy.org/podium/default.aspx?t=113385 Just be sure to mention that it is for the Rasmussen Family Chair. This donation is totally optional--we do not want anyone to feel obligated--but we think this is an opportunity for those interested to give back to a school that gave the Rasmussens an excellent education.

Only 69 Days Until the Rasmussen Reunion

Since Sally left Utah in April, we have been working behind the scenes to get ready for the reunion. We have worked out details for our Dutch Oven dinner on Saturday night at the Silver King and for the program that evening. We are gathering information to make your stay in Park City fun and memorable.
Frank Lynn has reserved our spot on the Heber Valley Railroad. We are looking forward to visiting on the train as we travel through Provo Canyon.
Brad Finch has received a few pictures from the family for the program Saturday night. As a reminder, we would like you to share 3 to 5 pictures from each family doing things they like to do so we can all learn a bit about each other. For example, for Sally's family, we would like 3-5 pictures from Dave and Sally, and 3-5 pictures from each of their 5 children. Please email these pictures as soon as possible to Brad at finestone7@hotmail.com. His phone number is 801-573-6961 if you have any questions.

The picture of Bob, Fred Sr. and Fred Jr. we think was taken about 1940 in Mt. Pleasant. Aren't these men handsome?

All Aboard for the Heber Valley Railroad

Frank has confirmed that we have at least 50 people that want to take a ride on the Heber Creeper. If you have already responded to Frank, nothing more needs to be done until we get to Park City. If you haven't responded, you can still email Frank and there will be room for you. Looks like it will be a fun, relaxing trip with plenty of time to visit with each other.

Fred was station agent in Park City for a couple of years before he moved to Mt. Pleasant and this is where Freda was born in 1908.

Mt. Pleasant History Blog

A few weeks ago we came across a website that has history about Mt. Pleasant. We found pictures of Fred and Bob at a Lions Club activity. Click on the picture to see them better. Last week, Katherine Stott, Sally Finch and Barbara Erickson visited Mt. Pleasant and the Relic House, which contains the history of Mt. Pleasant. They sponsor the Mt. Pleasant blog and are always looking for more pictures and information to post. They also visited the old family home, Wasatch Academy and the Railroad Depot. They look forward to the visit with the cousins during the reunion.

On another note, we were saddened to hear of the death of Aunt Jessie on Friday, April 9. She was exactly 91 1/2 years old. Our hearts and prayers are with Catherine and Carolyn and this time. We all loved Aunt Jessie and Uncle Fred and look forward to sharing our memories of them at the reunion this summer.

Saturday Ride on the Heber Creeper

Frank sent out information about organizing a scenic ride for the group on the Heber Creeper on Saturday, July 31 at 11:00. Contact Frank soon and let him know whether or not you are coming so he can reserve a caboose or passenger car. So far, over 25 cousins have signed up. Even if you are not going on the train ride, please let him know.

Here is the information Frank emailed:
- it's a one-way trip about 1.5 hours down Provo Canyon featuring "breathtaking scenery",
- if we act quickly enough we can charter a caboose, but we will not have a steam engine (it's going in for rebuild after Mem Day),
- if we get 50 people, cost would be $21 pp (w/ discounts for those over 60 and kidz younger than 12) which would incl bus trans back to depot, if we get 75 people we can charter a coach,
- the train offers food and beverage throughout the ride in the "full service snack car".

Please send an email to Frank at fjlynn@netscape.com and let him know whether or not you want to take a ride on the Heber Creeper.

Timpanogas Cave

Bill Blair brought back some fun memories of hikes up the trail to Timpanogas Cave with Uncle Walt. It is a pretty steep climb up the mountain to the entrance to the cave in American Fork Canyon. Walt would always be the first one to the top and leave the rest of us in the dust. How did he do it when he was so much older than us kids? The reward for making it up that hot, steep climb was walking through the cool, dark cave.
This may be an activity that some of the group may enjoy. You can reach American Fork Canyon from Park City by driving up to Sundance, over the Alpine Loop and down to the entrance to the hike to Timpanogas Cave. The hike to the cave is open from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm and it gets busy on weekends. Be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen and a sweater for the cave.
This link to Timpanogas Cave National Monument has more information. The picture below is of the "heart" of Timpanogas Cave.

We need information from you to make the reunion in Park City a success

Your participation is the key to this reunion. We need information from you as we are making plans. Let us know your ideas and suggestions by commenting on this blog or emailing Chris.

First, we would like you to share 3 to 5 pictures from each family doing things they like to do so we can all learn a bit about you. For example, for Sally's family, we would like 3-5 pictures from Dave and Sally, and 3-5 pictures from each of their 5 children. These will be a part of the program on Saturday night.
Please email these pictures in the next two weeks to Brad Finch at finestone7@hotmail.com. His phone number is 801-573-6961.

Second, at the Saturday night program, we would like everyone to come prepared to share memories and stories highlighting your grandparents, Fred and Rachel, and each of their six children. So start thinking now about something to share so that everyone can get to know our grandparents and aunts and uncles better. If you have any memorabilia about Fred and Rachel that you can bring with you, we would like to display it Saturday evening.

Third, so we can communicate when we are in Park City, we would like to gather cell phone numbers of each of the cousins, for example, for Barbara Anne's family, Chris, Anne and Bill.
Please email your cell phone numbers to Chris Buffington at buffingtonfamily3@yahoo.com.

Fourth, Chris thought it would be a good idea if each of the six families wore a different color for the group photo on Saturday night to more easily identify each family. These are the colors we have come up with:
El - Black
Freda - Brown/Beige
Fred - Blue
Bob - Red
Barbara Anne - White
Mary Margaret - Green for the Irish

Day trip to Mt. Pleasant at 8:30 am to see the Rasmussen family home, the railroad depot, Wasatch Academy and more. It is a 2 hour drive to Mt. Pleasant. More details to come. Here is a blog we found with Mt. Pleasant history.

For those who stay in Park City, there are activities at the Park City Mountain Resort right by the Silver King such as the Alpine Slide and Coaster, the Zipline, Mountain Biking, Scenic Lift Rides, and more.

Nearby is the Utah Olympic Park. They have Bobsled rides on the run used in the 2002 Winter Olympics. They also have an Alpine Slide, a Zipline, and an Olympic Museum.

There is also golf, biking and hot air balloon rides in Park City.

Saturday, July 31st

In the morning, we are trying to arrange a scenic train ride on the Heber Creeper.

In the evening, we will have a dinner and get together at 5:30 pm at the Silver King. We will have a group photo taken, have the chance to share stories and memories of Fred and Rachel Rasmussen and their children, and more.
